Common questions

Do I need an account?

No. The current iPhone app works without registration or sign-in. Your work pattern and saved roster are remembered locally on that device.

Why is the first-launch work pattern screen missing?

It is shown for a new local setup. Once completed, it does not return on every launch. Change the pattern at Settings → Work pattern. Clearing all personal data resets onboarding, but do not reset merely to change the pattern.

Can I use Shift Life on iPad or Apple Watch?

The current release is an iPhone app. It includes an iPhone Home Screen widget, not a watchOS app or a native iPad version.

Does the app support other interface languages?

The app interface, its roster date labels, reminders and widget use English. Some system-owned panels, such as Files or permission prompts, may follow your iPhone’s system language.

Why does Choose file reject my roster?

Check the actual file type and whether the file opens in Files. Then check for a single-person daily table, full dates, clear shift labels and times. See the import error checklist for specific causes.

Can I photograph my roster or select a screenshot?

No. Camera and photo-library import are not included. Choose the original supported CSV, XLSX or PDF file instead. The app can attempt on-device reading of clear scanned daily tables inside a PDF, but that does not make every photo or visual calendar importable.

Why does an XLSX calendar grid fail?

A visual month grid with colors or short letters does not necessarily contain a supported daily table. If the workbook has a separate sheet with dated daily rows, use a copy containing that one clear table. Read the XLSX guidance.

What happens if I import the same file twice?

Exact matching shifts are left unchanged instead of being duplicated. Changes to saved details may trigger a conflict prompt. Always check the import result and the relevant dates.

Does overwrite erase my entire calendar?

No. Overwrite and import replaces saved shifts that conflict with the incoming roster and imports the new entries. Unrelated shifts and personal plans remain. Cancel leaves the saved calendar unchanged. Read the full behavior.

The import succeeded, but I cannot see the shifts. Why?

Navigate to the actual month and year in the file. Files with future or past dates do not automatically become a current-month roster. Check several source dates and the import summary before trying the same file again.

Why can’t I find any available times?

Confirm the dates in the search actually contain roster information. Blank dates are not assumed free. Search future times, check preferred hours and duration, then review recovery time, travel buffers and existing plans. For an ashore-required plan, create an explicit ashore Day off. See planning steps.

Why is a day off not enough for an ashore plan?

The app needs a Day off with Confirmed ashore / at home enabled. The full plan and its travel buffers must fit within that confirmed ashore interval. A normal unmarked day off or an unknown date is not confirmation that you will be ashore.

Why does a saved plan show a conflict?

A roster or time-preference change can make an earlier plan unsuitable. Review the affected shifts and buffers, open the plan, and use Find another time if appropriate. The app does not silently move a personal plan for you.

How are overnight shifts handled?

Use the next day as the end date when a shift runs overnight. For imports, include an End Date rather than relying on a lower end clock to explain the following day. Check the time-zone guide.

A reminder did not arrive. What should I check?

Check iPhone Settings → Notifications → Shift Life, then the app’s Shift reminders settings. The shift must be in the future and its reminder lead time must not have passed. Check Focus, Scheduled Summary, lock-screen alerts and sound preferences. Reopen the app after changing your roster.

Are reminder settings proof that a notification was delivered?

No. Settings describe what is enabled and scheduled. iOS controls presentation, and a queued request is not delivery evidence. Test with a future shift and a short reminder lead time, then verify the actual alert on your iPhone.

Why is a reminder far in the future missing?

The app schedules a limited batch of upcoming local reminders rather than every future event indefinitely. Saving roster or plan changes, or changing reminder preferences, refreshes that batch. Recheck upcoming reminders as dates approach; a saved setting alone does not prove an alert was delivered.

Why is the widget not on my Home Screen?

The preview inside Shift Life does not install the widget. Add Shift Life through the iPhone Home Screen widget gallery and choose its medium size. Follow the widget steps.

Why does the widget still show an old shift?

Open Shift Life, check that future shifts are saved, and verify the widget’s Next shift / Next day off preference. iOS controls widget refresh timing. If it remains stale, remove and re-add the widget before considering any app-data reset.

Do my shifts sync to another phone?

There is no account-based cross-device synchronization in this version. Your local app and its widget share data on the same iPhone. Device backups are managed separately by Apple and your device settings.

Can support restore deleted shifts?

We do not hold a server copy of your roster. There is no in-app undo for deleting shifts, plans or all personal data. Keep your original roster files; if you have a separate device backup, its availability and restoration are controlled outside the app.

What information should I send to support?

Send the app version, iPhone model, iOS version, the action you tried and the exact error message. For import issues, start with the file type and a description of its layout. Only send a redacted sample if needed; remove names, IDs, employer-confidential content and other people’s details.
